New Ulm had its first large Go Red for Women event on Feb 19, 2009 at the Holiday Inn where 290 women gathered together to celebrate and hear more about how to prevent heart disease. After a delicious heart healthy meal, participants listened to four educative and motivational presentations. It started with Kathy Nelson’s, a young heart attack survivor, sharing her own personal heart disease story; right after it continued with Jeff VanWormer, the Heart of New Ulm Project Director, describing women’s role in community programs for the prevention of heart disease; then Dr Shalini Bobra, a cardiologist with Minneapolis Heart Institute Foundation, presented on heart disease and how to prevent it, with humor and excellent scientific explanations; and finally Diana Pierce, Kare 11 news anchor, presented on how to set SMART goals and stay motivated to be heart healthy. Participants listened to all presentations with great attention and satisfaction with the event was very high overall.
