Holiday Trimmings
 Week 7
Ways to Stay Motivated

As the Holiday Trimmings program starts to wind down and the winter continues, you may be wondering how you will stay motivated to continue the healthy behaviors you have been practicing and recording during the holidays. Remember, it's your health, so continue doing what works for you.

 Staying Motivated
  • You can continue to record your physical activity and stress level. Use your tracking calendar as a visual reminder and motivator to stay active.
  • If you need competition to keep you going, make a deal or have a contest with friends or family. See who can walk the most steps during the day, or sign up for a spring event (like a 5K run/walk) to train for together.
  • Continue to set SMART goals, monitor your progress and create new rewards for yourself.
Think about the "why"

Whatever you do, make it fun - and have fun while you are doing it. Think about the bigger picture as to "why" you are improving your health. You are doing it not just for yourself, but for your kids and your spouse, too.

You are also helping your community or workplace by living a healthier lifestyle, because it helps you to be more energetic and positive.

Tips to keep physical activity fun and interesting:

  • Use exercise tapes or go to an exercise class.
  • Turn on music and dance.
  • Play with your kids.
  • Watch your favorite TV show while you walk, bike, or do strength training.
  • Take a stretching break at work.
  • Meet a friend for a walk instead of going out to eat.
  • Do arm curls with your bag or purse while you wait in line.
  • Go bowling with friends.
